333 Amsden, Alice H. Escape from Empire: The Developing World's Journey through Heaven and Hell (Hardcover)
U.S.A. The MIT Press 2007 0262012340 Hard Cover As New As New
Like new. May have slight shelfwear. Escape from Empire: The Developing World's Journey through Heaven and Hell (Hardcover) By Amsden, Alice H. Product Description The American government has been both miracle worker and villain in the developing world. From the end of World War II until the 1980s poor countries, including many in Africa and the Middle East, enjoyed a modicum of economic growth. New industries mushroomed and skilled jobs multiplied, thanks in part to flexible American policies that showed an awareness of the diversity of Third World countries and an appreciation for their long-standing knowledge about how their own economies worked. Then during the Reagan era, American policy changed. The definition of laissez-faire shifted from "Do it your way" to an imperial "Do it our way." Growth in the developing world slowed, income inequalities skyrocketed, and financial crises raged. Only East Asian economies resisted the strict prescriptions of Washington and continued to boom. Why? In Escape from Empire, Alice Amsden argues provocatively that the more freedom a developing country has to determine its own policies, the faster its economy will grow. America's recent inflexibility—as it has single-mindedly imposed the same rules, laws, and institutions on all developing economies under its influence has been the backdrop to the rise of two new giants, China and India, who have built economic power in their own way. Amsden describes the two eras in America's relationship with the developing world as "Heaven" and "Hell" a beneficent and politically savvy empire followed by a dictatorial, ideology-driven one. What will the next American empire learn from the failure of the last? Amsden argues convincingly that the world and the United States will be far better off if new centers of power are met with sensible policies rather than hard-knuckled ideologies. But, she asks, can it be done? Product Details Hardcover: 224 pages Publisher: The MIT Press (June 29, 2007) Language: English ISBN-10: 0262012340 ISBN-13: 978-0262012348 Product Dimensions: 9.1 x 6.1 x 0.9 inches

353 Andreas Bluhm; Michael Zimmermann; Barbara Schafer Masters of Impressionism (Hardcover)
U.S.A. Hatje Cantz Publishers 2008 3775720928 Hard Cover New New
New. Masters of Impressionism (Hardcover) By Andreas Bluhm; Michael Zimmermann; Barbara Schafer Product Description For lovers of the late-nineteenth century art movement that broke all conventions of academic painting by privileging color over line, encouraging work en plein air and depicting realistic subjects from modern life, this substantial new collection is a must-have. Featuring work by Cezanne, Manet, Monet, Morisot, Renoir, Sisley, Signac, Seurat and Van Gogh, it is culled from the collection of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum & Corboud Collection in Cologne, Germany--called "Wallraf" for short. Founded in 1861 and housed in a beautiful building designed by Oswald Mathias Ungers, Wallraf is Cologne's oldest museum and one of Germany's greatest spaces for seeing important historical art. It boasts one of the most extensive collections of Western art in the country, from the Middle Ages through to the early twentieth century, and its Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection is now the largest in the country, thanks to the permanent loan of 170 paintings by the Swiss collector Gerard J. Corboud--which included among its gems Van Gogh's great 1888 painting, "The Langlois Bridge at Arles." In this richly illustrated volume, all of the treasures from Wallraf's Impressionist collection are presented for the first time in stunning detail. About the Author Andreas Bluhm is the Head of Exhibitions and Display at the Van Gogh Museum, Amsterdam. He has organized and co-curated several exhibitions including The Color of Sculpture 1840-1910 and Light! The Industrial Age 1750-1900. The Industrial Age 1750-1900. 356 Andrei Codrescu; Dan Burkholder The Color of Loss: An Intimate Portrait of New Orleans after Katrina (Hardcover)
U.S.A. University of Texas Press 2008 029271713X Hard Cover New New
New. The Color of Loss: An Intimate Portrait of New Orleans after Katrina (Hardcover) By Andrei Codrescu; Dan Burkholder Product Description "The wonder of these photographs is that they look like paintings, yet the objects depicted within them are not idealized. The dying domestic objects of the people to whom these interiors belong are no longer of this world. They have been captured on their journey to becoming indistinct trash. At the moment of their capture, they still looked like what they used to be, but moments after they were photographed, they no longer were anything. Their last breath of life is in these photographs; their only other existence is in the memories of their owners." —Andrei Codrescu The devastation of New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina has been imprinted in our collective visual memory by thousands of images in the media and books of dramatic photographs by Robert Polidori, Larry Towell, Chris Jordan, Debbie Fleming Caffrey, and others. New Orleanians want the world to see and respond to the destruction of their city and the suffering of its people—and yet so many images of so much destruction threaten a visual and emotional overload that would tempt us to avert our eyes and become numb. In The Color of Loss, Dan Burkholder presents a powerful new way of seeing the ravaged homes, churches, schools, and businesses of New Orleans. Using an innovative digital photographic technology called high dynamic range (HDR) imaging, in which multiple exposures are artistically blended to bring out details in the shadows and highlights that would be hidden in conventional photographs, he creates images that are almost like paintings in their richness of color and profusion of detail. Far more intense and poetic than purely documentary photographs, Burkholder's images lure viewers to linger over the artifacts of people's lives—a child's red wagon abandoned in a mud-caked room, a molding picture of Jesus—to fully understand the havoc thrust upon the people of New Orleans. In the deserted, sinisterly beautiful rooms of The Color of Loss, we see how much of the splendor and texture of New Orleans washed away in the flood. This is the hidden truth of Katrina that Dan Burkholder has revealed. Product Details Hardcover: 120 pages Publisher: University of Texas Press (March 1, 2008) Language: English ISBN-10: 029271713X ISBN-13: 978-0292717138 Product Dimensions: 12.4 x 11.4 x 0.8 inches

376 Aniko Gergely; Christoph Buschel; Ruprecht Stempell Culinaria Hungary [IMPORT] (Hardcover)
Hungary CULINARIA KONEMANN 2006 3833121866 Hard Cover New New
New. Culinaria Hungary [IMPORT] (Hardcover) By Aniko Gergely; Christoph Buschel; Ruprecht Stempell Product Details: Salami, goulash, pancakes, and many other delicacies - that's what Hungarian cuisine is all about! From hearty stews, meat dishes, sweet pastries, and cakes to exquisite culinary delights, the cuisine of the republic on the Danube has something for everyone. The rich variety of Hungarian cuisine, however, did not just happen by accident. As a melting pot for various cultures, it combines in the most delicious way the culinary skills of Asiatic nomadic horsemen with the heights of western European cuisine. East and west meet in typical Hungarian delicacies; dishes which cannot conceal their Magyar, Turkish, or Balkan heritage, or which betray their Italian origins. The elegant, French-influenced, yet unmistakably Hungarian cuisine of the renowned Gundels restaurants will delight any connoisseur of gourmet food. The secret of Hungarian cuisine lies in the traditional preparation techniques, which allow the full flavor of the typical ingredients to develop. The author and photographers take the reader on a culinary and historical tour through the various regions with their tempting specialties. The reader will visít the sweeping plains of the puszta, also known as the larder of Hungary, the cosmopolitan city of Budapest on the Danube, and the beautiful landscapes of Transdanubia and Upper Hungary with sandy plains, mountains, valleys, and wild, romantic forests. Fascinating accounts describe the Hungarian winegrowing tradition, introduce Tokai, the king of wines, and telt the "fiery" story of paprika with its surprising variety of forms and colors. The reader can let the aroma of coffee, the Hungarian national drink inherited from the Turks, waft beneath the nose, or dive into the wealth of fish in the Hungarian "sea," Lake Balaton. Richly colored photographs invite the reader to take part in a Hungarian peasant wedding, an Easter or Christmas celebration meal, and to try the festive recipes for oneself. Hatje Cantz Publishers 2006 3775716149 Soft Cover New
New. The Fashion Generation : Expedition to the Fashion Schools of the World By Anna, Susanne; Gronbach, Eva Book Description Does international fashion design still show the influence of culture and socio-ethnology--that is, elements of local significance--or is it, like so many other spheres, now dominated by global currents? The Fashion Generation seeks answers to these questions in the prototypes and designs of graduates of design schools all over the world, and thereby also presents a fascinating parade of new talent and trends. It includes work from the renowned fashion schools of London, New York and Antwerp as well as designs created by representatives of the largely unknown avant-garde from Africa, Eastern Europe, Australia/Oceania, South America and Asia. The contributing authors also discuss new, interactive forms of presentation that could well replace traditional ideas about clothing display in museum settings. 389 Aoyagi, Hiroshi Island Of Eight Million Smiles: Idol Performance And Symbolic Production In Contemporary Japan
Cumbreland, Rhode Island, U.S.A. Harvard Univ Pr 2005 0674017730 Hard Cover New New
New. Island Of Eight Million Smiles: Idol Performance And Symbolic Production In Contemporary Japan By Aoyagi, Hiroshi Book Description Since the late 1960s a ubiquitous feature of popular culture in Japan has been the "idol," an attractive young actor, male or female, packaged and promoted as an adolescent role model and exploited by the entertainment, fashion, cosmetic, and publishing industries to market trendy products. This book offers ethnographic case studies regarding the symbolic qualities of idols and how these qualities relate to the conceptualization of selfhood among adolescents in Japan and elsewhere in East Asia. The author explores how the idol-manufacturing industry absorbs young people into its system of production, molds them into marketable personalities, commercializes their images, and contributes to the construction of ideal images of the adolescent self. Since the relationship between the idols and their consumers is dynamic, the study focuses on the fans of idols as well. Ultimately, Aoyagi argues, idol performances substantiate capitalist values in the urban consumer society of contemporary Japan and East Asia. Regardless of how crude their performances may appear in the eyes of critics, the idols have helped establish the entertainment industry as an agent of public socialization by driving public desires toward the consumption of commoditized fantasies. Product Details Hardcover: 300 pages Publisher: Harvard University Asia Center (July 15, 2005) Language: English ISBN-10: 0674017730 ISBN-13: 978-0674017733 Product Dimensions: 9.1 x 6.3 x 1.1 inches
